Lilypads and pebblebeds

Bystock Pools nature reserve is managed by the Devon Wildlife Trust charity and is located near East Budleigh common, and is part of the East Devon Pebblebed heaths.
On arrival we were welcomed to a peaceful lilypad covered pond, surrounded by boardwalk and trees.

After walking around the edge of the pond, the path opens out into a meadow with tree root filled paths and sandy pebbles.

You do need to be careful where you choose to sit, as the ants obviously thrive here.

There is a decidedly hidden valley feel, with the tall pine trees, a bit like a scene from Jurassic Park.

From here we adventured further down to Squabmoor reservoir, a coarse fishing lake managed by South West Lakes Trust. Fish include carp, tench, bream, roach, eels and perch.  We parked in a small woodland parking, but there is also a car park with toilet facilities by the dam.  The access road to this is more like a gravelly bridleway.

We made our way down through the woods on a path until we came to a sign for the reservoir.

Again we were greeted by a mass of floating lilypads and a nice path along the bank of the lake.
There were several named fishing bays, providing some fun to see what the next one's called as we walked along.

At the dam, a family of ducks and geese came to see if we had anything for them, sadly we didn't.
We walked up out of the small car park along the gravelled road before turning left to take a wander along another bridle way back towards the van.  From here we could see miles of paths still to be explored, but our thoughts had turned to dinner so, for today, another pleasant evening spent on the common land of East Devon.
